Christopher McHugh

“…. and remember everything is true except the words and the pictures” Tom Stoppard, Squaring the Circle

Christopher McHugh trained at Bath Academy of Art and Manchester Metropolitan University. He was a founding member of Brighton’s Red Herring Studios (1984) and Fabrica Gallery in 1995. He is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Chichester.

‘I like to think my paintings are more like the nature of remembering – vivid yet mutable; concrete yet constructions, probably unreliable but somehow part of the way we really see the world – a mixture of experience and dream and imagination.”  McHugh’s work is an intriguing arrangement of would-be forms that hint at familiar pictorial conventions – convention leads the eye into the painting where it is then abandoned in a constantly changing landscape, never resolving into a definitive reading. These are paintings about place and longings, where memory is balanced by desire.’
